A leader effectively directs operations and manages resources.
One of the greatest challenges in overseeing 17 remotely located Hutterite colony schools, is the fair distribution of budget and human resources. In 2012 our staff determined to make literacy and the improved reading abilities of our students a central focus. We were all trained in the Fountas and Pinnell Literacy Benchmark Assessment program, and set about to secure the necessary kits and double our travelling library collection. We succeeded in this undertaking, and were able to conduct our assessments in the same way as other Palliser schools. Not only did this have a unifying effect for our staff, but in was a bond shared with all teachers in the jurisdiction.
The link below will open a Powerpoint presentation I prepared for a jurisdiction celebration of literacy in 2013. It documents the literacy journey of Palliser's Hutterite colony schools under my leadership. Comic books were the gateway to literature for me as a youngtser, so I thought I'd have some fun with that in the presentation. |
